Assistant Minister's Column

I cannot make you any promises about this church regarding transformation. I cannot tell you that you will be transformed by this church. I cannot tell you that you will be transformed by life. I neither have that power nor clairvoyance.

Because I have yet to meet someone who has not been transformed by life, and because I have met many people who have been transformed by being Unitarian Universalist, I’m willing to bet that you will experience transformation.

As a minister my role is not to force you to transform. Instead, it is to create the space for you to do the work you have been called to do. I can’t make a Satsuma tree grow by pulling at it until it’s as big as I want. I have to give it the right soil, water, exposure to sun, and a little something to lean on until it’s strong enough to stand on its own. The tree then knows what to do, but I put it in the right environment. I don’t create the water or the sun or the soil. I just give it access.

This year’s theme, Open for Transformation, is about creating the opportunities for transformation. This church is here for you to do that internal exploration: to find out who you were born to be and how to change the world. Come on in, we are open for transformation.
